Clothed in Strength and Dignity
“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” — Proverbs 31:25
There are some garments we wear that are more than clothing. They carry stories. They hold memories. They remind us of where we came from and, sometimes, of how far God has brought us.
When I think of Proverbs 31:25, I am reminded of Dolly Parton and the little coat of many colors her mother made for her when Dolly was growing up in the hills of Tennessee. The family had very little money, so her mother gathered scraps of fabric and stitched them together to make a coat for her daughter. To the world, it may have looked like a coat made from scraps, but to a little girl, it was something much more. Dolly later turned that childhood memory into a song, telling the story of the coat her mother lovingly made for her. What others might have considered evidence of poverty became, in her memory, a garment woven with love. And perhaps that is part of what Proverbs 31:25 teaches us. God has a way of taking what the world calls insignificant and clothing it with significance.
The woman described in Proverbs 31 is not praised because she possesses expensive clothing, worldly status, or material wealth. She is clothed in something far more valuable: strength and dignity. Those garments cannot be purchased in a store. Strength is not merely physical power. It is the ability to keep standing when life has knocked us down. It is the courage to keep going when the road becomes difficult. It is the quiet determination to trust God when we cannot see what lies ahead.
And dignity is not something the world gives us, and therefore, it is not something the world can take away. Our dignity comes from knowing whose we are. We belong to God. We are His beloved daughters, created in His image, redeemed by His grace, and held securely in His hands. Our worth does not depend upon our bank account, our appearance, our accomplishments, our age, our past, or the opinions of others. The world may look at our lives and see scraps. God sees something He can weave into a beautiful testimony.
Perhaps your life has some patchwork pieces. Maybe there are places where you have known disappointment, loss, rejection, poverty, illness, loneliness, failure, or heartbreak. Maybe there are chapters you would rather hide than display. But what if those pieces are not evidence that your life is ruined? What if, in the hands of God, they are part of the garment He is making?
A patchwork quilt is beautiful because of the pieces that have been brought together. Some pieces may be bright while others are faded. Some may represent joyful seasons, while others remind us of sorrow. Yet when they are carefully stitched together, they become something none of the individual pieces could have been alone. God does the same thing with our lives. He takes our broken pieces, our ordinary moments, our disappointments, our victories, our scars, our prayers, and our stories and can weave them together into something beautiful for His glory.
That is why Proverbs says the woman of God can “laugh at the days to come.” She isn't laughing because she knows everything will be easy. She laughs because she knows Who holds tomorrow. There will be days we cannot predict. There will be circumstances we cannot control. There will be seasons that stretch our faith. But the woman clothed in strength and dignity does not have to live in fear of what tomorrow may bring. She can face tomorrow because her confidence is not in tomorrow. Her confidence is in God.
I love the picture of that little coat made from scraps of fabric. It reminds me that sometimes we don't recognize the beauty God is creating while He is stitching our lives together. We see scraps; He sees a garment. We see weakness; He sees strength being formed. We see our past; He sees a testimony. We see what we lack; He sees what He can do with what we have placed in His hands.
So today, remember this: you do not have to dress yourself in the opinions of the world. You do not have to wear shame because of your past, fear because of your future, or insecurity because of what you think you lack. If you belong to Christ, you have already been given something far more precious. You are clothed with strength. You are clothed with dignity. And you can face tomorrow because your God is already there.
Maybe your life looks a little like a coat of many colors, made from pieces you never would have chosen for yourself. But don't despise the pieces. Some of the most beautiful things God creates are made from pieces the world would have thrown away. Let Him stitch. Let Him strengthen. Let Him restore. And when you look toward tomorrow, do so with the confidence of the woman in Proverbs 31:25, not because you know what tomorrow holds, but because you know Who holds you.
And remember, Joseph? In the Bible it tells us his father gave him a beautiful coat of many colors. That coat caused him to be despised by his brothers. Isn't it amazing how God uses symbolism to get some very important points across? As a visual learner, I sure think so. I'm thankful for those examples of the Proverbs woman and of Joseph. They remind me of my own childhood.
My mother was a seamstress and though she never made me a piece of patchwork clothing, she did teach me scraps of fabric were valuable. That's one of the reasons I fell in love with quilting many, many years ago. Fabrics hold stories, beautiful, powerful ones, like those old printed flour sacks my great grandmother and grandmother used to have. Those were treasures for generations and were put to good use in making durable attire and quilts.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding us that our worth does not come from what we possess, how we look, what we have accomplished, or how others see us.
You are the One who gives us strength and dignity. When we look at the broken pieces of our lives, help us see them through Your eyes.
Take every disappointment, every scar, every hardship, and every joyful memory and weave them together according to Your purposes.
Help us not to fear the days ahead, but to face them with confidence, knowing that You are already there.
Clothe us with strength when we feel weak and with dignity when we feel forgotten. May our lives become a testimony of Your faithfulness and grace.
